Known in Cuba as the Perritos de la Habana ("little dogs of Havana"), the Havanese became a beloved companion of the Cuban aristocracy and was later nicknamed the "Silk Dog" for its long, soft, flowing coat that comes in virtually every color and pattern. When many Cuban families fled to the United States following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, they brought their Havanese with them, and the breed was rebuilt in America from a small founding population.
